Secure email

Sometimes we need to send you confidential or sensitive information by email. To keep this information safe, we use a secure service called Mimecast.

What is secure email?

Sometimes we need to send you confidential or sensitive information by email – things like account details or documents that need completing. To keep this information safe, we send it through a secure service called Mimecast. They’re a trusted partner of Skipton and help us to protect your data and keep your personal details safe.

What does a secure email from Skipton look like?

You’ll receive an email in your usual inbox. This email will always:

  • Come from 'skiptonsecureemail@skipton.co.uk'.
  • Include a button that takes you to our Mimecast Secure Messaging service.
  • Clearly reference Skipton Building Society.
  • For added security, the website link in your notification email will be unique to you and will include a special code, for example: 'https://skipton.login-uk.mimecast.com/u/login/[unique-code]'.

If the email doesn’t match the above, or you weren’t expecting anything from us, you can always contact us to double-check.

Why do we use secure email?

Secure email helps us:

  • Protect any personal or account information we send to you.
  • Safely share documents that need reviewing or signing.
  • Make sure only you can access sensitive content.

It’s simply a safer way for us to communicate when we need to share private details.

How do you access your secure email?

Visit Mimecast Secure Messaging

To open your secure email, you'll be taken to our Mimecast Secure Messaging service.

The first time you visit, you'll be asked to create a password. This password is separate from the one you use for your Skipton Online login.

60 days to access

You have 60 days to access your secure email. If you do not access it within 60 days, your password will expire. If your password has expired, when you next try to log in, we will send you an email with instructions to reset it.

Why do we use Mimecast?

Mimecast is a leading provider of secure email service. Seeing ‘Mimecast’ or ‘Secure email’ in our communications means your information is being protected.

The differences between secure email and secure messaging

They’re both secure ways we communicate with you, but they’re used in different situations:

Secure email

Secure email is used when we need to send sensitive or confidential information, such as account details or documents. Remember, this email will always come from 'skiptonsecureemail@skipton.co.uk'.

Secure messaging

Secure messaging is used for general messages or queries within the Skipton app* or our online portal. You'll receive an email from 'skiptonbs@skipton.co.uk' to let you know you have a new message, but documents can't be attached.

*If you’ve moved over to our new app, secure messaging isn’t a feature. Don’t worry, you can still web chat with us or phone us during our opening times.

In short, if personal information or documents are involved, we’ll use secure email. For general messages, we’ll use secure messaging.
