What is investment planning and advice?

Think of it as a map for your money: you know where you want to end up – a bigger pension, an earlier retirement, or more freedom later in life. What you might not know is how to get there.

That’s where investment planning and advice comes in. It can give you a clear way forward, guided by an expert who knows the terrain. We’ll focus on what matters to you, your goals, and help you build a personalised plan designed to move you in the right direction.

Good to know

Investing can offer stronger long-term returns than cash, but you usually need to put your money away for at least five years. The value of your investment can move up and down. Any tax you pay on your investments and pensions depends on your own situation – and rules could change. The Financial Conduct Authority doesn't regulate most forms of Inheritance Tax planning.

Why invest?

In other words, what are your goals? People invest for lots of different reasons, like:

  • building a bigger pension
  • retiring early – or retiring more comfortably
  • trying to make money work harder than it does in a savings account
  • making the most of tax-efficient accounts like ISAs and pensions
  • checking in on existing investments and pensions
  • getting ready for later life – including inheritance tax planning.

Whatever the future looks like for you, your investment plan should be built around it.

What can you invest in with Skipton?

You might be wondering what types of investments we advise on.

We offer Restricted Advice. This means we don’t advise on every type of investment that exists. Instead, we focus on areas we know well and the providers we trust.

What does that mean for you?

Well, your adviser spends less time trawling the whole market, and more time finding suitable options for your needs. This usually includes a mix of investments matched to your goals and how comfortable you are taking risks with your money.

What’s the best investment plan?

The best investment plan is one that’s built around you.

Most personalised investment plans spread your money across different types of investments or asset classes. This helps manage risk, because not everything rises or falls at the same time.

We’ll typically recommend you put your money into an investment fund that invests in a range of different assets. This means you’re likely to come across things like:

  • cash
  • shares (UK and global)
  • property
  • government and corporate bonds.

You don’t need to know the ins and outs of everything. That’s our job. When we meet, we’ll explain how it all works and how this approach could help you reach your goals.

What to expect from investment planning and advice

We keep things simple and focused on you.

Let’s talk

We’ll start with a short call to understand your goals to see if advice could help. If it looks like it could be right for you, we’ll book a meeting with one of our financial advisers.

Getting to know you

We’ll take time to understand your priorities, your current financial set-up and how you feel about taking risk with your money. All of this shapes your investment plan.

Your personalised investment plan

Your adviser goes away to create a clear personalised plan based on your goals. We’ll take time to go through it step by step and what it could mean for your future.

Putting your plan into action

If you choose to go ahead, we’ll take care of the setup and keep things simple.

Did you know we can review your existing investments?

If you already have investments, pensions or ISAs, we can review them to see if they still fit your life today. What once looked like the right place for your money might no longer be your best option. We’ll explain where you might benefit from making changes – with no pressure to act.

How much is financial advice with Skipton?
