How to create an email address

Why it’s important to have your own email address

In today’s digital world, having your own email address makes it much easier to stay connected. Whether you’re keeping in touch with loved ones, managing online accounts or receiving important updates, a personal email address is your gateway to many services.

If you don’t have one of your own, don’t worry – you’re not alone. The good news is, setting one up is quick and easy. Just follow the five simple steps below.

How to create your own personal email address

  1. Choose a free email service provider

Pick a reliable, easy-to-use provider and visit their website. A few trusted options include Gmail, Outlook, or Apple Mail.

  2. Click ‘Create Account’

Once you’re on the site of your chosen provider, look for a button or link that says something along the lines of ‘Create Account’ or ‘Sign Up.’

  3. Enter your details
    • Your full name
    • A username for your desired email address
    • A strong password
    • Sometimes your mobile number, date of birth and gender

Top tip!

Choose an email username that’s memorable to you. It could include your real name or a nickname, such as james.smith321@gmail.com. If your first choice is already taken, you’ll need to choose a different username – this is sometimes as simple as adding numbers or an initial.

  1. Set a strong password

Pick something memorable, but hard for others to guess. It’s good to use a mix of uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers and symbols. Many email providers will show you how strong your password is as you type it in.

You may also be asked to provide extra information, like a mobile number or a backup email. This helps you to recover your account if you ever forget your password.

  2. You’re all set

Once you’ve completed the form and submitted it, your new email address is ready to go. You can usually send and receive emails right away.

Keeping your information safe

Now you’re all set up, it’s important that you only ever give your email out to people you trust. At Skipton, we’re incredibly vigilant about data security. That’s why we’ll only accept an email address if you personally give it to us – to help keep your information safe and give you peace of mind.

We might ask you some additional data security questions just to check it’s really you – but this will always be done by one of our colleagues.

Once you are securely set up with your email address – and you’ve registered it with your Skipton account – you can regularly review your accounts online, contact us and even receive information on your own secure portal or app.

Just remember, we’ll never ask you to share your login details by email, text or phone call. It’s important to always stay alert and secure.
