What is the Skipton Funeral Plan?

A funeral plan is a simple and practical way to have the peace of mind that your funeral has been arranged and paid for in advance. When the time comes, not only will it give your family the reassurance that your wishes are known, but it will also help to protect against rising funeral costs.

The Skipton Funeral Plan, provided by Dignity, gives you the flexibility to tailor-make a plan so it's right for you. You start with a base plan and then have the option to add extra elements to make it truly personal. You can tailor-make your plan when you buy on the phone or use our video appointment service Skipton Link. Alternatively, you may want to choose the pre-packaged Classic Plan, which is also available to buy online, by post, or by Skipton Link.

To help you decide whether a Skipton Funeral Plan is right for you, here are a few frequently asked questions.

Taking out the Skipton Funeral Plan allows you to make important decisions about what you and your family want from your funeral. It will also help save your loved ones the worry and stress of making all the funeral arrangements at such an emotional time, because they will already know your wishes. One call to Dignity is all it takes to put your plan into action and a trusted Dignity nominated funeral director will then be on hand to guide and support them every step of the way.

Yes, but the costs of a burial funeral can’t be guaranteed in the same way as a cremation funeral. Your funeral director will arrange certain services which are provided by third parties and the cost of these services can vary widely across the country. We can’t guarantee that your funeral plan will cover these costs, such as the burial plot. However, a fixed contribution of £1220 (rising with RPI inflation) will be made towards burial fees and any services provided by these third parties. The funeral director’s services for arranging and conducting the funeral are covered in full, by the plan for a burial.

Anyone aged 50 or over can take out the Skipton Funeral Plan. You’re guaranteed to be accepted and there are no upper age limits and no health or medical questions to answer.

It’s very straightforward to pay for your plan. You can choose to make a single lump sum payment or make the payments more manageable by spreading the cost over 12 monthly payments by cheque, credit or debit card, or Direct Debit at no extra cost. Fixed instalment periods of up to 25 years are also available, provided all payments over any instalment term longer than 12 months are completed by the 85th birthday of the eldest person named on the plan. Plans paid for over more than 12 months will incur an Instalment Charge and will need to be paid by Direct Debit. However, these plans are covered by the Skipton Commitment.

As long as the funeral is conducted in mainland Great Britain, Northern Ireland, Jersey, the Isle of Man or the Isle of Wight, the cost of the guaranteed services in the plan will be covered. A fixed UK address will need to be provided to Dignity for them to allocate a nominated funeral director. If you live abroad, Dignity will assume you have family in the UK, and if your intention is to have your funeral here, you should provide the address of a relative. The plan does not cover the cost of repatriation from outside of Great Britain, Northern Ireland, Jersey, the Isle of Man or the Isle of Wight.

Once you’ve bought your Skipton Funeral Plan you have 90 days to cancel your plan and receive a full refund, from the date you receive your Planholder pack. If you choose to cancel after 90 days, there’s a cancellation fee of £195, which will be deducted from your refund.

No matter what happens to Dignity, your funeral arrangements are protected, because the money you’ve paid is securely managed in the totally independent National Funeral Trust, which no one at Dignity has access to. The managing trustees of the Trust would work with the remaining nominated funeral directors, with the aim of continuing to provide services to plan holders where possible. If your funeral director were to go out of business, Dignity would nominate another approved funeral director to continue to provide services to planholders.

When Dignity set up your funeral plan, they will send you a Planholder Pack, which will tell you everything you need to know, including important information for the person who’ll be responsible for setting your funeral in motion.

Dignity will choose a trusted funeral director, who will offer support and guidance to whoever is organising the funeral. There is 24 hour, 365 days a year support from a UK-based client service centre, who will answer any questions you may have about the funeral plan. Your loved ones will also have access to a free telephone bereavement support service providing help and advice at a difficult time.

Yes, you can choose to add money to your plan to pay for extras including the wake, and this will increase with Inflation.
