Interest and Taxation

How is interest calculated?

Interest is calculated from the third working day from and including the day we receive a cheque (if this is a working day). Interest is then accrued until, but not including, the day of withdrawal, on a daily basis. This is either credited to your account balance, paid to another suitable Skipton account, or, sent via the BACS (Banks Automated Clearing System) to your bank or building society on the date specified in your product terms and conditions.

How will you tell me of interest rate changes?

Interest rate changes will be advertised in two or more daily newspapers, currently The Daily Telegraph and The Express and will be displayed within our branch offices. We will also send you a message saying the rate has changed and to check our website where the changes will also be displayed.

How do I receive interest tax-free?

If you are a non-tax payer, you are likely to be eligible to receive your interest gross without any deduction of tax. In this instance an R85 form should be printed, completed, signed, dated and returned to your local branch or the Principal Office, alternatively contact us via secure messaging and we can send you a form to complete and return to us. You need to complete one of these forms for each account you have with us.

The R85 form is applicable for UK residents who are eligible to receive interest paid on a gross basis. Otherwise, building societies are required to deduct tax at a rate of 20% from interest paid or credited to investors.

If you are unsure of your tax status please contact your local tax office and they will advise you. Alternatively, you can visit their website www.hmrc.gov.uk or call their Registration helpline on 0845 980 0645. Lines are open 8.30am - 5pm Monday to Thursday and 8.30am - 4.30pm on Friday calls charged at local rates.

Who needs to complete an R85 tax form?

If you are a non-tax payer, you are likely to be eligible to receive your interest gross without any deduction of tax. An R85 must be completed if the account is held in a child's name and he/she is a non-tax payer. If the child is under 16, the form must be completed and signed by the parent or guardian. At the age of 16, a new R85 form must be completed, signed by the child (account holder) and returned to your local branch or the Principal Office. Download an R85 form.

How do I deregister an R85 tax form?

If you have registered an R85 form but have found your tax status has changed and you are now required to pay tax, you must cancel your registration and tax will be calculated from the date interest was last paid to you. You can do this by sending a secure message once you have logged into your account or by sending a letter to our Principal Office.

I am a non taxpayer and have two accounts, do I need to complete an R85 form for each account?

Yes. A separate form is required in respect of each account you hold and in the case of joint accounts, a separate form is also required for each account holder.

Can I get my interest tax-free if I have a joint account with a tax-payer?

Yes. If you're a non-taxpayer but have a joint account with a taxpayer, you can still receive your share of any interest tax-free with our partial registration service. This will split the interest so that half is paid with tax deducted and half free of tax.

To register, you need to send a completed HM Revenue & Customs R85 form to us with details of the accounts where you want to split the interest. Download an R85 form.

What is a Section 975 - Certificate of Deduction of Income Tax?

This shows the gross interest paid and tax deducted on an investment account for a specific tax year. It may be required by HM Revenue & Customs if:

  • You need to complete an income tax return,
  • You are NOT registered as a non-tax payer,
  • Your tax deducted exceeds your total tax liability and the certificate is required in order to claim any tax refund. The HM Revenue and Customs booklet IR110 "A guide for people with savings" explains how you can work out whether you can claim tax back and, if so, how to claim. Alternatively, you can visit their website www.hmrc.gov.uk.

How can I request a Section 975 – Certificate of Deduction of Income Tax?

If you would like us to send you a Section 975 Certificate then please request via secure messaging and we will post one out to you. Please state the tax year that you require. If you require a duplicate copy of your certificate, a fee of £10 will be levied (Please note, we are only permitted to supply one duplicate if the original is lost). Further details on this fee.
