In 1986 the Government introduced tax relief for mortgage interest (Mortgage Interest Relief At Source - MIRAS) which we applied to qualifying mortgage accounts from that time. However, MIRAS was withdrawn on 5 April 2000 under Government regulations. A MIRAS 5 certificate (now known as a Certificate of Mortgage Interest) gives the details of the interest charged and the tax relief credited (where applicable) to your mortgage account during a tax year, eg from April 1999 - April 2000.
You may require a Certificate of Mortgage Interest for your tax return or your accountant may ask you to obtain one for the preparation of your annual accounts.
