Your Society's Annual Results 2015

Throughout our 162 year history, we’ve remained true to our mutual roots of supporting savers and borrowers. And over the last twelve months we have continued to safeguard members’ interest by offering competitive products, delivering first rate service, and ensuring the long term strength of our business.

Our annual results show that 2015 was another year of solid performance for Skipton, and further demonstrated that our core purpose of delivering consistent value to our members is still as relevant today as it was when we were founded. In 2015 we enabled more people to save for their future and buy their own home than we ever have before.

Your Society is in very good financial health; we have an unwavering focus on ensuring we deliver the best possible service for you. Here’s some of our key performance highlights from the last year.

Building a stronger, growing and better Society

  • We welcomed 43,348 new members to the Society, taking our overall membership to 838,087;
  • Our members showed their support to our competitive and award winning products, as our gross mortgage lending increased by 23% to £3.7bn. And through this, we were able to help 23,094 homeowners to purchase or remortgage their homes, including 3,847 first time buyers;
  • We also saw an increase in our savings balances, with them growing by £1.4bn to £12.8bn;
  • This record growth in membership and strong mortgage and savings balances helped generate a Group profit before tax of £146.9m.

Unwavering focus on members

  • In 2015 we celebrated being named one of The Sunday Times 100 Best Companies To Work For, debuting at number 58;
  • We were also declared the UK's top building society for customer experience in the KPMG Nunwood Customer Experience Excellence survey, and the seventh best out of 272 UK brands;
  • Giving our customers a brilliant experience and putting them at the heart of everything we do as a building society is very important to us. And in March last year the Society was named winner of the Customer Focus Award for Large Enterprise in the institute of Customer Service UK Customer Satisfaction Awards.

Giving something back to our communities

  • Through our award winning Grassroots Giving community funding programme, we gave £81,000 to community groups voted for by the public, in line with our funding ethos of 'helping people to help themselves';
  • We continued to support a number of key community partners, including the Great Yorkshire Show and the Skipton Building Society Camerata;
  • In 2015 we also donated £150,000 to the Skipton Building Society Charitable Foundation, which enabled the Foundation to support registered charities involved in helping people of all ages across the UK;
  • During the year we also launched a unique online community, retiresavvy, to encourage and empower people to take control of their own financial futures.
